Now that I think about it, I vaguely remember an actual school assignment to memorize a poem of our choice even before the 5th grade public speaking Cats fiasco*? I think I picked an A.A. Milne poem but I couldn't tell you which one.
* The part I didn't mention: as well as performing for other classes and our parents, there was an inter-school competition, which I went to but ultimately didn't compete in because I got there, stood up, opened my mouth, and immediately burst into tears.
